Is a Companion Breed right for you?

As lovely as they are, there are some points we would like to bring your attention to, just so we make sure you understand about owning a companion breed.

Being part of the family or your companion.

If you work full time, and your dog is left on its own all day, one of our dogs is not suited for you. They thrive on being with their forever family and need to have company. We do have our dogs in professional working family homes, but there is normally some in-home help around the house, this way the dog has company, or if not, doggie daycare is arranged. But leaving your dog all day until everyone arrives home is not suitable.

If you can do this, then there is nothing better than a cockapoo, Cavapoo or a Cavapoochon to be part of your family.

Socialisation

As with all breeds of dogs, but in particular with a companion breed, unless you socialise them well in their early months and first year of life, you will end up with an adult dog who has socialisation issues. We give you all the information you need, and it is important you take this seriously and follow it, you must teach your pup it is OK to be left on its own for short periods of time. We also suggest taking your puppy to puppy classes and ensure your pup experiences all different environments, from shops to busy parks, main roads. If you are not prepared to put the work in early on or do it correctly, please do not have a companion breed.

If you can do this, and prepared to follow our advice, then there is nothing better than a Cockapoo, Cavapoo or a Cavapoochon to be part of your life.

Grooming/Health Protection

Most crossbreeds are popular because of allergies and low shedding coat, but the coats need to groomed and will need to be groomed frequently or done by yourself at home. When the thicker adult coat comes in before they reach 12 months of age unless you maintain it, the coat will get matted, so we advise you to go to your groomers every 6/8 weeks. We also advise a puppy groom early on so your pup becomes familiar with going to the groomers. it is unfair to leave your dog to become matted to the skin. All a groomer can do is shave your dog, and allow the coat to regrow, don’t worry it does re-grow back fine. So please consider grooming responsibilities.

Cleaning of ears, just following our information will help you prevent ear infections and should be built into a plan of keeping your dog healthy.

Worming and flea treatments - protection is important, do put a plan in place, we can of course offer our advice and help.

If you can do this, then there is nothing better than a Cockapoo, Cavapoo or a Cavapoochon to be part of your family.

Pet Insurance

Our pups come with 5 weeks pet insurance in the owner's name already started, we issue the highest level of cover. We strongly recommend you continue with some level of cover, vet bills are really expensive, so for example, if your dog broke its leg in something like a rabbit warren when you're out walking in the forest, you can expect costs to run into the thousands. So having some level of cover in place is highly advisable. If you continue your insurance policy at any level of cover, you will receive a month premiums free. ANY cover is better than NO cover.

Feeding

Your pup has been raised on a high meat content quality food, if you feed a poor quality food, you can expect to see problems, just like humans who have a fast-food diet daily. You can visit Ooddles Kitchen here, all the formulas are grain-free and hypoallergenic with higher meat content, botanicals, fruits and vegetables, no added nasties and all-natural. Keeping your dog healthy ongoing is important, if we ate at Mcdonalds every day we would eventually see health problems, your dog is the same. If you wish to change to Raw feeding, Ooddles have a super range of raw food as well, packed full of superfoods, Defra approved manufacturer and made in the UK. www.ooddleskitchen.co.uk. Whichever food you feed, consideration must be given to feeding quality food. Your pup has had the very best start for nutrition. It is not always about the most expensive food, it is what is in the food that matters.

Size

We only breed from the English Show Cocker x Miniature Poodle, it typically gives a below-knee mid-size Cockapoo. But importantly the nature is amazing for all our parents, we do not breed from the working cocker or the toy poodle.

For a Cavapoo, it is only King Charles Spaniel x our small miniature poodle, this gives a smaller dog.

Summary

If you are fine with and prepared for the above and you are committed to putting the effort in early days, then there is nothing quite like having a companion breed to share your life with, they are funny, loyal, and very loving if bred correctly.
